ActionGear, lightweight task management October 13, 2008

ActionGear is the first product of my new company, GearSquare. It's a menu-bar application for lightweight task management on the Mac.

I liked Blacktree's QuickSilver and Visor because these apps were instantly available via hotkey, no matter what I was doing. They were menu-bar applications that meshed real well with my workflow.

So why not a todo list that was just a keyboard shortcut away?

ActionGear is fast

I had two goals. Make ActionGear as fast as possible for users to enter in data. Make it as fast as possible for users to find a task to do.

Use ⌥Space to toggle ActionGear to review your tasks or add new ones. Turn your cursor into a crosshair and save a portion of your screen as an attachment. Or use your iSight to capture sketches. Preview attachments w/ QuickLook. Get reminders straight onto your desktop w/ Growl integration.

so that's what I've been up to lately

According to Mercurial, I started coding ActionGear on May 30th, 2008. It took me about 4.5 months to get version 1.0 out the door. I've gotten some great ideas from users - so I'm going to keep coding away, adding useful features.

Working on ActionGear has taught me a lot about Objective-C/Cocoa, so expect a few blog posts about that. But don't worry, I don't plan on quitting Django/jQuery anytime soon =].

It's 3AM here, so I guess it's about time to head to bed. Good night!
