the four hour workweek November 25, 2007

I spent today at a bookstore and managed to read The 4 Hour Workweek. Even if the title is a bit skeptic, it really is an inspirational book.

At work, my boss told me that the average French work week is 35 hours. They say they're more productive because they waste less time. I'd guess, on aevrage, people waste between 50%-70% of their time at work. By waste, I mean not doing things that are necessary, like water cooler chats and small talk with coworkers.

So, if you don't believe in a 4 hour work week, why not a 20 hour work week? Doesn't that sound more reasonable?

Start off by dropping your time to 30 hours and increase your productivity/output. Make sure it's measurable! For me, that's the number of tickets closed and features added. Then try dropping your time to 20 hours and cutting out any distractions.

I'll start following Tim's advice to see where it gets me. I'm also excited to start a businesses as a form of side income. If, err, when it takes off, it may even become my main business. Hopefully, I'll be able to manage it and drop down my work week to 10 hours or less. That's my goal, and I want to do it before I'm 25 =].
